I was just curious about a couple of names from Star Trek that were similar and I wondered if there was a connection between the two. Khan Noonian Singh and Dr. Noonian Sung. I've seen EVERY movie and EVERY episode of EVERY Star Trek up to the first episode of Voyager and I have not seen any co-relation.

  1. Khan Noonian Singh is the villian in 'The Wrath of Khan', played by Ricardo Montalban.

Dr. Noonian Sung is the creator of 'Data' in Star Trek:TNG, both charctors played by Brent Spiner.

No relation between charactors exists. It's like Bill Jones and Bill Smith.

  2. No correlation I am aware of.

Khan Noonian Singh (played by Rickardo Montalban) in the original series and again in the Star Trek II movie was killed at the end of that movie.

Dr. Noonian Sung, (played by Brent Spinner) as the android data's creator would not have been born when Khan was killed.

  3. Yes.  I believe the answer you're looking for is this: Gene Roddenberry had an old friend from long before Star Trek started that he wanted to get back in touch with.  That characters name was something like Khan's name from the original series episode, "Space Seed."  Unfortunately, his friend never got the message.

In The Next Generation, Gene tried once more with the name of Data's creator in a similiar fashion.  Unfortunately, his plan failed again.

As an interesting footnote, in the newest series, "Enterprise," Dr. Soong's ancestor had worked on genetic resequencing to create superior supermen like Khan and his followers had been in the early 1990s.  He was also a Soong, and thought of Khan as a mold for his new specimens.  Though they never actually put one and one together, Dr. Soong working on formulas once used on Khan Soong was really a treat for us Trek watchers who caught what was going on.

  4. No there is no connection.  Khan according to the Star Trek storyline was a character in the original series.  He was a product of genetic engineering bred for the eugenic wars supposedly occuring in the 1990's.  He and his crew of genetically engineered physicially perfect beings escaped Earth in an ancient ship called the Botany Bay after being defeated in the war.  The Botany Bay would have been built apx. 150 years before warp drive was invented by Zefran Cochrane, so Kahn and his crew survived in cryogenic freeze, and were discovered by the Enterprise and Captain Kirk.

Soongh (the creator of Data) would have created him about 65 to 80 years after Khan died aboard the Reliant at the end of Star Trek II.

  5. Khan Noonien Singh was a genetically bred super human, who was created by Arik Soong, who is Dr. Noonian Soongs father or grand father :)
