Question:

In State Tuition????

I know that people who live in state get a relief on their tuition. My sister is going to school to Kansas (woo hoo go jayhawks) anyway. Our Mom's house is an hour and forty five minutes to two hours away from the school. Our Dad's house is thirty minutes away from the school but is in Missouri. Can my sister stay at our Dad's house during the week but still have the permanent address with our Mom because she comes home every weekend? Gas is just so darn high!!

  1. It depends on if your sister's school allows off campus housing.  If she is allowed to live off campus, then she can live where ever she wants and keep her permanent address as your mom's.  Many schools require students or at least freshman to live on campus unless they are living at home, if she is living at your dad's that will be considered her home, and then she would most likely be considered out of state.

Your sister is in luck. The residency requirements for in-state tuition in Kansas are unusually beneficent:

    Kansas law says:

"A dependent student of divorced parents shall be treated as a Kansas resident for tuition purposes as long as one parent is a bona fide Kansas resident. Documentation is required."

So there you have it - if either of your parents are bona fide residents of the state of Kansas, your sister qualifies as a state resident for tuition purposes, regardless of whether she lives with your mom, your dad, or on her own.

    I hope that helped!
