  1. Straight forward answer:

    It depends on you. What you shoot, what you expect of lens, how much to spend.

    But since you want a binary "yes/no" answer - let's take it from Ken Rockwell:

    At the bottom of 55-200 review Ken says (quote):

    "For half the price you can get the 70 -300 G, which is more lens. I'd probably get the 70 - 300 G instead, since I want the longer zoom range although the 70 - 300 gets soft at 300 mm."

  2. Nikon has three 70-300 mm lenses made over the past few years.  Price per ounce the 55-200 mm VR is a fine lens ... if you need the extra reach, the AF-S 70-300 mm VR is a good choice.

    It really depends if you need the extra reach.
