Question:

In Texas, do they take your expired drivers license away when you go in person to renew it?

I'm getting on a flight in a week and need some sort of identification to get on the plane. If the DMV takes the license away, then I won't have an photo ID since I don't have a passport. I'm trying to decide if I chance an expired license at the airport or chance not having a license at all by getting it renewed tomorrow morning.

  1. Get it renewed, I was flying a year ago with an expired license and the TSA gave me some flack.  They are scrutinizing even more than ever, I was flying last week, and my license picture shows me without my glasses on- I wear contacts now, but at the time I was wearing glasses., and the TSA agent questioned me for about 3-4 minutes.

  2. No they will not ask to take away your license.

  3. I believe you would have more problems trying to board an aircraft with expired I.D. (considering how "touchy" the TSA people can get) than with the folks at your local DMV office taking your license. You'll have to renew your license anyway, so why not do it now.

  4. Good question.  I don't think so but you can call your local DPS office and ask them.

  5. I live in Houston, TX, and I know for a fact that they do not take your old, expired license from you when you go to renew. I have all of my old licenses. No need to worry! :)

  6. They let you keep it, but they cut the top off of it in order to cut the magnetic strip in half.
