  1. peopel around that era in time would get married at an early age...because the lifetime was much shorter...people usually started dating  ( courting) around the age of 13-15. they got married soon after 14-16

  2. I agree you should be more specific but, I'm assuming you're American so.. in that time in American society you began dating fairly early even marriage came at around 14 or so for women. Back then you have to remember that society was very different and mostly agarian. Thus if you have more sons they work the fields more and thus most families had many children. Alot of men would get married young and leave their hard work young and start their own families. At the same time alot of old men would marry very young girls and thus you have civil war widows recieving pension into around the 1950s possibly even the 60's you'd have to look it up. Back then there were generally no or very lax/unenforced marriage laws so you could pretty much do what you want, this doesnt mean you can sleep around all the time, think of birth control at that time. And divorce needless to say was frowned upon. So generally your sweetheart became your wife.

  3. You mean "courting."  You've got a 150-year spread here, during which changes did occur, and you need to indicate what country you're talking about.

Edit:  Vorbeck's given a good answer.  There was also a tradition called "bundling," where an unmarried adolescent man and woman would spend the night in the same bed.  The boy would generally spend the night at the home of the girl.  This happened only in winter; they would be given separate blankets, and sometimes a "bundling board" was used to separate them in bed. This was mostly done in New England and in Pennsylvania.  Needless to say, despite the fact that no physical contact was supposed to take place--the couple were just supposed to talk--it led to many premarital pregnancies.  I had a history professor years ago who said there was a statistic that almost 25% of girls who married in Colonial America were pregnant at the time, but I don't have a source for this.

  4. It was called courting and they usually started this behavior when they were 13 or 14. People in those days seldom lived beyond their middle forties. Courting at that age and marriage by 15 was the norm. They could become grandparents in their middle 30s and die before their grandchildren reached their teen years. Hard to imagine, given today's life spans.
