In The Sims 1Studio Town, when I get 2 stars, I'm having a problem?

When my sim wants to model, they ask me to choose 3 types of modeling in a sequence. (energetic, seductive and artistic) I always choose the wrong one and loose half a star. How can I advance to 2 1/2 stars. Is there a trick with the sequence?

If you watch the director while you perform, he will have a bubble over his head.  If the bubble contains your Sim's face, it means he liked what you chose.  If it contains your Sim's face with an X through it, that means he didn't like what you chose.  

On your first try, you should pick option # 1 for all three parts.  Watch to see when the director likes it.  On the second try, you can choose option # 2 for all three parts, or just go ahead and guess at the other two parts.  Repeat this as often as needed to get all three parts right.

Note:  when your Sim reaches 3 1/2 stars,  more options will be available to you (like the fashion runway) but you will only have two chances to get it right.  It's good to practice without saving your game before you try this for real.
