  1. In a historical context the role of Caliban to Prospero is that of slave and master; native dweller and European colonist. Prospero, through his education and literacy makes him (in his opinion) superior to the illiterate Caliban. Despite the fact that Caliban's knowledge of language enables him to curse Prospero, Prospero's hold is complete through his strength of mind. Basically, Prospero sees Caliban as nothing more than a servant, meant to serve his conqueror.
