  1. That depend on the bookmaker!

Some pay ONE QUARTER of the odds, - but, OTHERS pay, only, ONE FIFTH! I think it depends, on the number of horses IN the race, - but, I am UNCERTAIN, of this!

    Good luck!

  2. As a general rule :-

Less than 5 runners...All on to win.

    5-7 runners   1/4 odds 1st and 2nd

    8 + runners 1/5 odds 1st/2nd/3rd

In handicaps of 16 or more runners that extends to cover the 4th place as well.

(Some bookies on big fielded prestidgious races may offer concession to cover 5th place as well..usually Paddy Power)

  3. Depending on the number of runners either 1/4 or 1/5

  4. Best advice is 1/5 or 20% of odds;

An each way bet at 5/1 would yield 2x stake money as a total pre-tax return.

    20% of 5/1 is evens

    evens plus 1 is 2

    2 x stake is returned

  5. Bookies only pay out on the fourth horse in a handicap, not in any other race, and only when that handicap has 16 or more runners. On these races they pay the place portion of the bet at 1/4 the starting price.

On all other races with 8 or more runners they pay 1/5 on first 3 only, and on those with 5,6 or 7 runners, 1/4 the odds on the first 2 only.

There used to be reductions in place odds in races where the favourite starts odds-on, but I don't know if that still applies.

Hope this helps, and good luck. You'll need it!

  6. If you bet on a win then you get nothing if the horse comes outside of the top spot.

If you bet 'each way' then it can depend on what the bookies say. They will normally give odds for any each way bet, so they will say "4/1 first four places, quarter odds", which means that you will get one quarter of the odds if the horse finishes 2-3-4th places.

Note that an each way bet is always two bets: If you put £1 on a horse each way, the 50p will be automatically bet on the horse winning and 50p on it coming in one of the stipulated places. So if your hosre came in second, then you loose the first bet, but get one quarter odds on the second bet, which is 50p (i.e 50p @ 4/1 = £2 - a quarter of which is 50p).

If your horse were to win in the above example you would get the each way winnings of 50p, plus the winning bet of £2 = £2.50, (plus your money back).

Hope I haven't make it sound to difficult, as it is easier than it looks...
