2. Should I learn German or Austrian Dialect if i plan on going to Austria?

Thanks, and be honest with answers :)

  1. Well most Germans, Austrians and German Swiss speak both standard German which they learn in school and also is the language of the media(Newspaper TV Radio)and their local dialect.

In Vienna and Linz that would be Austrian.

Do learn German as that is the language which id understood all over the area also to learn the local dialect is a lot more complicated.

Austrian is not much different from Standard German but can be quite different from other german dialects. The closest to Austrian is Bavarian

  2. Your best bet is to learn German - the local dialect changes from city to city  to town, etc.  It's like speaking English and visiting places like the U.S., England, Australia, etc.  Everybody will understand you.  Also, what you learn will depend on your teacher's origin and how long they've been away - language changes - old fashioned words fall into dis-use and new words are coined (like in English "bling", etc.)

Remember, too, that people migrate and bring their own dialect with them.  Linz, like other cities, has many people from the Czech Republic, Turkey, etc. and their "German" will sound different, too.

  3. They speak German with an Austrian dialect. I would learn German because either way they will understand you, and their dialects are different depending on the region. German you can use in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. The language is the same just a few different words just the pronunciation will vary a bit.
