  1. You can set in front of the ten foot line as long as you are below the plane of the net.  You are not allowed to attack the ball so if you are assisting another player that is legal.  However if you go to set the ball over you have to be completly facing the net and below the plane and behind the line because that is considered a kill if it lands on the other side just like it would be if you were to attack (spike).

I have played and coached for many years, check out a new rule book for men's or juniors, there are different rules that apply to different ages and competitiveness.  Men's and women's rules can differ very much so.

  2. the rule is that the libero can set infront of the 10 ft line but he/she can not contact the ball over the plain of the net it would be a backrow attack violation. and obviously no jumping infront of the 10 ft line i'm sure you already know.

  3. The Libero may set using their hands from anywhere on the court.  If the last contact with the floor by the Libero is on or in front of the attack line, the next player may not send the ball over if the ball is completely above the height of the net.  If that happens, it is an illegal attack.

The height of the ball when the Libero touches it only matters if the ball is completely above the height of the net AND it crosses into the plane of the net AND the Libero is on or in front of the attack line.  That would make the play by the Libero an illegal back row attack.  If the Libero bump sets or is completely behind the line, any player may attack the ball.

The NFSHSA, USAV, NCAA, and FIVB rules are very similar in wording.

NFSHSA is the junior high and high school rules.

    USAV is the club rules.

NCAA is the women's college rules.

    FIVB is the international rules.

USAV 19.1.3.4  A player may not complete an attack from higher than the top of the net, if the ball is coming from an overhand finger pass by a Libero in his/her front zone or its extension.  The ball may be freely attacked if the Libero makes the same action from behind his/her front zone or its extension.

  4. Yeah the libero, as well as any other player located in the back of the attack line can set the ball in front of it as long as he/she does not go over the net. Many strategies include the setter starting in the back and moving up as to have 3 spikers at all times.

  5. the libero can set in front of the attack line. he can also set the front row, like a setter ,as long as the ball is not taken over the tape, or "attacked" in any way by the libero. all the same rules apply for the libero, excepting that he can come in and out without using a sub. i think rules just change last year too, now the libero can serve too. hope this helps
