Example: On a police scanner (or ham radio) You hear about a car accident that has just occurred on the bottom of an icy hill near your house. Having done this sort of thing before, you grab your go-kit-- full of flares, reflective vests, first aid supplies, blankets, etcetera, and head for the hill in your vehicle.

Once you get to the scene of the accident, you realize that the road is completely blocked off by the crash. You dispense the blankets and first aid supplies to the shaken but otherwise O.K. drivers. You look up the steep icy hill that the fresh show shower has conjured, and you realize all is not well. There is a large bend in the road, halfway up the hill, and the view of oncoming drivers is heavily obscured by trees. The posted speed limit is thirty-five, but you know that everyone goes at least forty down the hill.

You know that forty miles an hour is much to fast to be able to stop in time in these conditions.

In WA, can you legally use a RED magnetic car light?

  1. h**l I'd do it anyways because in a situation like that you are the "Good Samaritan" and you know the road conditions and what can be handled.  I seriously doubt that an officer would write you a citation for doing so especially if you were to explain your reasoning for doing it.

Your helping to save lives and prevent any further accident I think that is quite understandable.  Good Luck!

  2. No. You MAY NOT!  In fact, in some jurisdictions, it is ILLEGAL to even possess a flashing red light.

If you really want to be helpful and get involved, why not become a volunteer fireman?  That way you can have a flashing green light on your car.

  3. Only if you are a certified Emergency vehicle or you are a member of an emergency response organization which has the permission of the state to operate privately own vehicles with red lights, and then you will have a read light permit.

I would suggest amber lights they are legal in most states.

  4. The only flashing lights of any kind that are legal on the street are turn signals and appropriate emergency flashers. “Chasers” and other flashing or blinking lights are not legal anywhere on a car – inside or out.

  5. Not unless you are an authorized emergency services vehicle/person--police fire ambo.
