  1. Sort of. The musical and book both give similar backgrounds for a little cub who became the Cowardly Lion.

    The musical:

The Cowardly Lion was a Cub, brought in by government officials to a history class at s**z University on the day Dr. Dillamond, a Goat, is taken away because Animals* are no longer permitted to speak. Elphaba, born with green skin, and Fiyero, a Winkie prince, grab the Cub (in a cage) and flee the lecture hall. They release the Cub and we know no more of it's fate until the second act. The Tinman explains his grievances over his plight, due to a spell of the "witch's", and tells them the Lion wouldn't be a Coward if she had let him fight his own battles.

    The Book:

Dr. Dillamond is removed in a more permanent way and a Dr. Nikidik replaces him. Also, the class is Life Sciences, not history. Dr. Nikidik brings a cub in one day to explain that at a very young age it would be possible to eliminate all abilities of speech, thus the difference between Animals and animals. The class is enraged and three girls (we never learn their names) rescue the cub.

*Animals are capable of speech and expressing thoughts, wear clothing. animals are the animals we see every day

  2. In the Broadway show there is a cowardly lion. When the new professor replaces Dr. Dillamon he brings out a lion. Elphaba steals him and "fights his battles" for him. Then he becomes a coward.

  3. in the book? yeah...first when Elphaba is at school one professor brings out a scared looking Lion cub, and later on in the book when dorothy shows up with the cowardly Lion, Elphaba makes the connection that she thinks its the same Lion.
