A few friends and I want to go spend the night in Canada (we all recently turned 19, so yes, we want to legally go out to bars and drink) - We are thinking Windsor, is this a fun town? Where should we stay that is in walking distance to some fun nightlife? Bars, casinos, etc. We have never been there! Any help would be great. Thank you!!

  1. oh god no.  It's got some okay bars but really windsor is considered by most canadians (even the ones that live there) to be the @sshole of Canada.  It's dirty and run down and gross.  If you can make it, for what you want Niagara Falls would be PERFECT its only 3 or 4 hours from Windsor (depending on how fast/slow you drive).  It would make a fun roadtrip.

As a caution, if you are used to American beer be careful up here, ours is a lot stronger and if you think you normally drink 7 in a night, you may wanna stop around 4 or 5.

To the commenter below me:  Niagara Falls is only expensive if you fall into the Tourist Trap.  You travel 5 miles from the tourist area and you're back to normal prices again. haha it amuses me that you fell for that.

  2. I would suggest not going to Windsor, sorry cw21...

Niagara is a fun place to go, even if it does get a little pricey, you can still have a great time and there are places to stay just a little ways away from the main action that are affordable.  Just don't go to Denny's, because the food is ridiculously over priced, but you do get a lot.  My friend and I shared one of their breakfasts for $14 and were both ready to throw up because we were so ful.  So it totally depends on if you're willing to share :P

Another place to go would be London.  The University of Western Ontario is there, and it's one of the larger schools in Ontario, and there are tons of bars all along one street, and it's tons of fun.  For the most part, there is some cover charges though, but it is pretty beautiful there.

But head to Toronto or Niagara falls if you're really looking for some crazy times. :)

  3. I live in Windsor and take exception to the above commentor.  We have a beautiful landscaped waterfront with rollerblading and biking/walking trails that you can walk for miles on.  If you come over here on a weekend night in the summer/spring/fall, the main street (Ouellette Avenue) is teeming with kids (American and Canadian) hopping from bar to bar.  Within about 4 blocks, there are probably a dozen of them, and you won't have trouble finding fun.  Just follow the crowd!  Very safe as well!  The casino is within easy walking distance of this as well, about 4 blocks east of downtown...again, very safe walk.

As far as hotels, we have tons right downtown.  Of course, the Hilton, Radisson, etc., right on the Drive (water),  are going to be pricey, but you could try the Travelodge, 33 Riverside Dr. East (ph. 519-258-7774), Ramada Plaza, 430 Ouellette Avenue (519-256-4656), Quality Suites, 250 Dougal Avenue (519-977-9707), Days Inn, 675 Goyeau (519-258-8411).  All these hotels are right downtown and also close to the casino.  I think most run a shuttle to the casino as well.  I've included phone numbers but you could probably make a reservation through their websites, as they are all pretty well chain places, I think.

Regarding Niagara Falls, I have been there and it is a fun place as well, and of course famous for the Falls.  It is very touristy, tho, and very, very expensive.  I had the grand slam breakfast at their Dennys about 5 years ago and it was about $14.00...ridiculous...so if you go there, pack lots of cash.  You will need it.

    Suggested bars downtown Windsor:

    Papa Cheneys

    The Boom Boom Room

    Aardvarks (blues)

    Koko Pellies

    The Beach

    Peppers

    Woodys Outhouse

    Leftys Lounge

    The Whiskey

    The Honest Lawyer

...I could go on, but these are a few, all within about 4 blocks.
