When traveling north on 151 southwest of Madison, there is a very large white "M" carved on the side of a rock formation on the north side of the highway. I have always assumed it was some type of aircraft marker, but when an out-state friend asked for info, I realized I don't really know. Can anyone provide the "what & why" of this landmark?

That whole area was a lead mining region.
