Like a pretty detailed calligraphy letter that is part of the word, but not making the whole word weird and spacey?

  1. Dolphin,

Like Elmyr said, you can change the size of the font to about 24 or so and then change the font shape to Monotype Corsiva (for instance). It will make it look sort of like what actual books look like. You can't do any fancy lettering unless you make it an image, then you can't get the next letter right next to it. Publishers have printers who have special programs to do that sort of thing.

  2. Just change the font face and size of the first letter. The face you want would probably be a Gothic, Fancy, or Calligraphy font, but others would work.

And I missed the awkward space part...

  3. Go to Toolbars and click Hide/Show ---> Drawing to show the drawing toolbar. Click "textbox" and type the first letter. Change the size and/or font and drop the textbox in where you want it. Right click the textbox, click "format," and click the box that shows the body text squaring around the textbox. Click "OK" and you're done.
