I've heard from some say why stop building a narrow body jet like the 757 in these economic times?

  1. i think so it wasnt making enough money

  2. The 757 was (and is) NOT A FUEL HOG.  In fact it was designed specifically for fuel efficiency.  However it was expensive to build, therefore could not compete with the 737 next gen (the latest, with the more modern wing) and A320.

So, Boeing can't build them if customers don't order them!

  3. I love the shape of it, however it drank alot of fuel!

  4. Airlines weren't showing lots of interest in purchasing the planes anymore. The only reason why the 757 sold soo much was because for most of the 757's life, it was the only plane that could do its mission profile, but when the 737-900ER and A321 came along, these planes could perform most(but not all) of the 757's missions and at a lower fuel burn, so Airlines went for these planes instead. In todays oil prices, the 757 wouldn't have been very economical, and the only reason why Airlines aren't dumping them is because like the A340-600, the 757 is not that fuel efficient, but its still useful for some missions that 739ER's and A321's can't do. The cost of buying a new one and maintaining it,  costs more than having a 739ER fly the missions, but stopping for fuel

  5. The 757 was meant to be a replacement for the 727 but the original model was larger.  Some said too large.  Boeing had actually thought about a redesign of the 727 with the elimination of the center engine.  It was decided to go with a whole new airplane but the only engine offered for the type at first was a Rolls Royce power plant.  Later in production Pratt and Whitney engines were offered and this combination was ordered by AA which still operates 150 aircraft.  While the program was a resounding financial success, sales dwindled during the late 1990s, eventually forcing Boeing to cease production.  737s were on the drawing board that would have been at or near the capacity of the 757.  The 737 has turned out to be the workhouse of the airlines today and since carriers like to achieve commonality in it's equipment the 757 was canceled in it's favor.  In my opinion Boeing made the right decision.

  6. well, demand for the plane went down, so i guess Boeing didn't really have a choice, but i prefer the 757 over the 737, plus the 757 has the transatlantic range. If it was me, I would be making modifications to the 757 and not the 737 as boeing has done, even though i dont really mind the 737.

  7. yea using way to much fuel

  8. >>  do you think it was RIGHT to stop

It is right if it doesn't make enough money for the company.  These things are kept close to the company vest, so nobody knows for sure until they announce it.

    good Luck...
