  1. Only one Normal Summon or Set per turn unless a card effect specifies more.

    You can summon a monster in face up attack position of defense position, face-up or down. The only way that face-up defense position is an illegal move is when a card's effect forbids it.


  2. Yes, it is not allowed. However, certain magic cards, such as Monster Reborn, allow you to special summon in defense mode. Also, certain monsters, like Total Defense Shogun, can be automatically summoned into defense mode, however, all of these rules only apply if the certain card's text says that you can do this.
