I hope the reason you are asking about the D40's 2.5 fps rate is not so you can machine-gun sports shots.

The best and really only way to assure you get the shot you want shooting action or sports is to shoot at the peak of action.  Even if you had a camera that could shoot at 11 fps, there is still a high level of probability that the shot you want is between those you get.
