  1. You plant your bottom on the kayak bottom. Your feet are planted on the rudder pedals.

    If your are paddling rudderless, your feet are still in the 'boot' and your heels are your connection to the boat.

    Very few canoe paddlers kneel -- most canoes have seats that are a few inches up from the bottom. Kneeling for long periods of time is very hard on the knees.
