I'm starting a charity foundation and my friend will also be joining me ( but will not be actually getting involved in the start up process). What should her designation be?.

  1. That's totally up to you. It varies from one to another. Your title should probably be "Founder and President" or something like that - "Founder" generally just means you founded the organization, but nothing more than that. So, if you call yourself "Founder and President," she would be a Vice President.

Other designations are CEO, Executive Director (but generally you have a few EDs), etc.

  2. There is no designation after "founder." In fact, "founder" means only that, but it does NOT mean that you run the charity. The founder is NOT in charge.

The top designation at a charity is the CEO of the board of directors. The board is officially, legally in charge of the charity. ALL staff at a charity, including the executive director, report to the board.

Your friend can either be a board member or a staff member, depending on what her role will be -- will she be putting up money for the charity and soliciting further donations, or, will she be working at the charity, helping with administration or programming? For the former, she would be on the board. For the latter, she would be on the staff.

Same for the founder -- you need to decide which you want to be on, the board or the staff.
