If one grabs it by the widely separated bars, which muscles are more targeted? How about if the narrowly separated ones? Thanks

  1. Chin ups are the best exercise to build upper lats.

Wide and close grip chin ups have remained the gold standard exercise for developing a strong muscular upper back... nothing compares to it.

    Muscles targeted in WIDE-GRIP:

    latissimus dorsi

    teres major

    pectoralis major, pectoralis minor

    subscapularis

    triceps

    rhomboids

    brachialis, brachioradialis

    Muscles targeted in NARROW-GRIP:

    pectoralis major, minor

    deltoid

    latissimus dorsi

    teres major, minor

    subscapularis

    infraspinatus

    triceps

    trapezius

    rhomboids

    biceps brachii

    brachialis, brachioradialis

So, basically the narrow grip chin up recruits additional shoulder joint muscles.  The deltoid, which is one of the main muscles that is responsible for many movements of the shoulder joint, is only used in the narrow grip chin up.
