In a firetruck is theree a device that switches the signals?

ok so in a firetruck or ambulance is there a device that switches the signals to "green" for them? or does the dispatcher do that? or do they have no such thing and just go through red lights? thank you

  2. Yes. If you look up on the pole where the lights are hanging across the road you should see a small device (it should be located between the 2 sets of lights). that is what the signal from the emergency vehicle is aimed at to get the lights to go to or stay green.

    To the poster who really wants one bad......sorry, but they're not available to the general public to own or purchase.

  3. I don't know what the answer is for other cities, however in NYC, there are a few firehouses that are situated close enough to an intersection that the firehouse does have an override switch to assist with fire apparatus exiting the house in an emergency.

  4. yep, it is called an opticon. It uses a strobe and a laser.  I want one bad.

  5. Yes they do. Some traffic signals are equipped with a sensor that picks up the frequency of a strobe light mounted on the emergency vehicle, which causes the lights in the intersection to change to allow the vehicle to get through.
