  1. eddie is full of bologna, you want your horse to change leads, cause they get tired on the one lead, it is like changing gears in a car and also going in and out of the turns is much smoother when they are on the proper lead, however they will not always change leads, even if one tries to get them to change, and it is accomplished by shifting your weight and kinda cueing  with your hands and the reins to get them to change their lead and sometimes tapping them with the whip and sometimes all of the above, but it doesn't always work, esp. if a horse is more sore on the right lead than the left, that horse will not change its lead.

GOOD Question by the way. your average horse player would never ask a Q. like this.

  2. I don't know but why would you want to?  The consequence is that they usually lose a yard or two when they do so.

Edit: I said at the outset I did not know.  All I meant to imply was to let the horse decide.
