In a hospital situation, who would be considered the next of kin

For an unmarried, adult female with a mother and adult brother... which would be considered the next of kin as far as medical issues are concerned. Just curious

  3. Parent takes precedence over sibling. The siblings are only connected through the parent, so the parent is closer to each sibling than they are to each other.

    (Genetically, they're just as close. But next of kin rules are based on number of people you pass through, not genetic percentages.)

  4. If the patient doesn't designate otherwise, the mother would be considered the next of kin.

  5. First who ever the patient list as next of kin. the ladder is:

    mother, father, brother and sister, aunts and uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews, Etc....

  6. I typically list my older sister, or in your case, your brother.  Either can be fine, but if you have a mom who is a worrier like mine is, it's best to choose someone else.  Take into consideration whether or not your brother has kids or a family of his own, which might make it more difficult for him to get to the hospital to help you.
