In a hot desert climate, is sedum a good option for ground cover? Does it spread?

The area to be covered is quite large. Since the landlord doesn't plant to put in a lawn, and we really are not keen on mowing if he does, we are wondering if Sedum is a good ground cover option. How do you keep it in shape? Trim? What variety would look like grass?
