This is a question for a masters study class. I have a killer sinus infection right now and can't think clearly, can anyone help, please. The whole question is, in an economic recession, what type of business won't be as adversely affected as the majority? In an economic boom, what type of business will not prosper as greatly as the majority? Thank you in advance for your help.

  1. In a recession, the businesses that offer necessities to the general public will not be affected. For example, everyone needs essentials like food, clothing, insurance, etc. So businesses offering those products or services would not be affected. Be mindful though... expensive restaurants and boutique clothing stores would be severely affected.

In an economic boom, the kind of businesses that don't prosper are the ones that offer limited growth and are used by people in limited use, no matter their financial condition. An example of this is toothpaste. No matter how much more money you are making, your toothpaste consumption probably won't increase. So consumer goods are probably businesses that will not prosper as greatly as the majority.

  2. Staple items should remain stable unless a recession hits hard and deep. In Canada, a retail chain called 'Canadian Tire' actually prospers during recessions because they traditionally sell items for the do-it-yourselfers. What does the middle class majority still have to do, and cannot overdo in both circumstances? Other than the staples, there's basic home and car maintenance, and low-end consumer electronics that seems recession proof too.

  3. probably industry in extreme necessity items...where demand does not increases or decreases depending on economic boom.....something  like...

    1.) Essential life saving drugs

    2.) Food industry
