In a small airport, is online check in more efficient? Also, how do you check your bags?

Usually there are computers there and you do the online check in and it prints a receipt which you take to the desk and then check your bags.......I'm sure ideally this is a time saver but you have to go to the counter to check your bags anyway so its not really any more convenient.......I guess if you were traveling with just one carryon it would be easier. Airports arent ever going to be speedy or easy anymore....something we as americans need to get used to.
