  1. Put in A drop ceiling .

  2. How high are the ceilings?

  3. You need greater sound absorption at the ceiling. "Putting things" on the walls would help a little bit, if they are the right "things" ... like acoustically absorbant materials. But the ceiling is the key in a situation like this. There are many options, not all of them look bad. Ceiling tile manufacturers like USG or Armstrong make a variety of products for this, and there are speciality acoustic companies that also make products to help you. The best bet would be to hire an architect or good (licensed) interior designer with experience in acoustical design.

  4. My parents have the same probalem It is driving them nuts but my scool had these pannels that absorbed sound but they don't look to hot!   Try playing music if you don't already it helps!

  5. some type of cloth on the walls or drap sheets of cloth from the ceiling criss crossing in waves of flow from one side of a wall to the other. This will help to drop the ceiling space and make your resturnat cozy.

  6. Curtains, wall hangings and thick piled carpet is about as much as you can do.

Be glad that you have a pretty full restaurant and everyone is talking and chatting - more in the till!!!!
