  1. some schools assign students by grade-some just group by age into preschool, elementary, intermediate, secondary...

classes should be grouped by needs-

children with physical disabilities should be kept in mainstream with accommodations

they are taught by various methods depending on needs-

orton gillingham may be used with students with dyslexia

ABA with students with autism/developmental disabilities,

    etc..

  2. Special needs can be very diverse so different situations for different problems.  Quite often severely SEN students will have an assistant that works with the student most of the time, so the teacher does more or less what she would always do, but the assistant then overcomes the specific problems with the student.

Sometimes a vision problem needs the use of magified computer screens, enlarged worksheets and sometimes different coloured background page colour, but student may be very able.

In the UK, increasingly fewer special schools, and more students taught in mainstream schools with special resources and helpers.
