  1. It's called a flail. Something strong but flexible is used to knock the wheat out of the head without mashing it.


  2. Old time threshing floors used a flail of some kind to beat the kernels out of the husk of small grains.  Corn was usually passed through some sort of sheller or shelled by hand and usually not separated on a threshing floor.

    One of the first mechanization techniques was to use horses or oxen to walk around the threshing floor instead of beating it with a flail.  Not to sanitary.  later they devised a system where some sort of drag was pulled across the floor and the animals were outside the floor on a turn stile.
