In a triatholon, when swimming do you keep your head above or below the water in an open lake..cant you not c?

You can try swimming with your head above the water but it will make you go alot slower.  You should naturally swim straight but when you breathe to the side you could take a quick peak at where you are to make sure you are going in the right direction.  Don't forget goggles they will help you see.
