  1. It depends.  A typical bar in the mid-west is very different than one in say, New York or Los  Angeles.  Still most will have at least 2-3 brands on tap.  Bottles are the norm in a bar as opposed to cans which are most often sold to go.  A bar has to have an off-sale license to sell liquor to be taken off the property and few do so rarely will you see cans in a bar, club, or pub.  Budwieser and Bud Light are everywhere.  Miller, Michelob, Pabst too.

Canadian beers are popular such as Molson, Labatts, and St. Pauli Girl.

Sam Adams bottles many varieties and you might find a bitter among them, though I cannot say for sure.

Boch beers usually come out in autumn and might be the closest thing to be found unless you find a micro-brewery in the area you are in.

Heineken, Grolsch, Guinness are pretty standard imports found most anywhere.

Corona and Tecate common in the southern states.

Coors is very common, but my opinion of it is dehydrated water.  Hard to call it beer. Sorry Coors people.

But being I was raised in Wisconsin when there were local breweries all over the state, I have to recommend the only small brewery still in existance thanks to Miller buying and keeping them alive and brewing.  "Lienenkugels" made from the Big Eddie Springs in Chippewa Falls is my favorite.  The original or boch, not the other 3 newer types.(I forgot what they are named as I don't live there now.)

Also, there are "dry states" meaning that alcohol is prohibited or restricted in how it is used.  Utah is one I know for sure, but there are others.  Some states don't sell alcohol on Sundays,  Most stop selling at 1 or 2 am.  Others like Nevada's Las Vegas are 24/7/365 and you can walk about while carrying open beverages.

So if you are having a beer tasting holiday in the US, avoid the dry states and Cheers!

One more thing.  Some states restrict the alcohol content to 3.2 where in the next state the same beer will have 5.4 so that's another thing to watch for.    =)  Ah, just enjoy!

  2. They come in bottles usually. Coors, Budlight and such. You'll survive! They are usually very light-colored compared to the english brands. Hard luck finding a bitter. I doubt it!

  3. Please don't touch the Guinness in the States.Rotten.Most bars on the east coast serve European beer such as Heineken and Stella. West coast (CA anyhoo) have more Mexican beer influences such as Corona or Sol, served with fruit, usually lime. Bud, Coors and SamAdams are everywhere. "Irish" bars may serve Caffreys or Kilkenny which are similar to bitter but I couldn't (and wouldn't ) guarantee the quality x

  4. Same as pubs in Europe.  I have traveled all over the world (on one giant pub crawl) and in most European pubs, you might find more local brews, but that's it.  They usually don't serve cans in pubs, but it's not unheard of.  Most popular seems to be Budweiser, Coors, Stella, Red Tyre, Paps Blue Ribbon (which is NASTY), Guiness, etc.  It depends on the pub, though.  If you go to an Irish pub, there will be more Irish beers.  Same goes for an English pub.  Almost every beer is available in the USA.  Even my boyfriend (who is from New Zealand) was able to find an obscure New Zealand beer in this place called High Times, which is the size of a large grocery store, but they only sell beer, wine, liquor and tobacco.  If they don't have it, they will find it and order it for you!

  5. Try a bar that has a Micro Pub attached. They make more bitter varieties.

  6. If you are lucky you might find a Guinness. Otherwise think Bud or Millar Lite and you won't be too far out.

  7. Even if you can find a decent beer you won't be able to drink it until it DEFROSTS

  8. can or bottles  over  their

  9. bud, miller, ...there are soooo many it seems like.

it depends where you go.  party cities, like where big universities are, will serve draft or bottle usually, sometimes an occasional 24oz can.  anywhere else is usually bottle.
