In a professional working environment what do the above terms mean?

someone said... "He is such a jobs worth **** !!!" but i didn't understand what she meant

Also another person said "I have never worked with so many gob shys in my life"

I know it sounds like my working environment is terrible, but it's not. I was referring to a different department..

Thanks in advance.

  1. Jobsworths do the job as it suits them, or to a set of nonsensical rules. They will not bend to accomodate an unusual situation.

Gobshites are people who talk trash or other people down.

  2. Gob Shy means you/ someone doesnt talk much

A jobsworth is a person who uses his or her job description in a deliberately un-cooperative way, or who seemingly delights in acting in an obstructive or unhelpful manner

  3. A 'Jobsworth' is someone who will only do the job as per the job description.  So, for example, if their hours are 9am-5pm they will arrive at 9am on the dot and leave at 5pm exactly.  If it is not listed on their job description that they make tea or coffee for meetings they will huff and puff about it when asked and probably spit in your drink!  They will never go that extra mile to help someone out.

I haven't heard of a gob shy but a gob shite is someone who talks a load of  rubbish whilst thinking that they know it all.

I think all working environments have the odd jobsworths and gobshites!

    Hope this helps.

  4. Its actually gob shite and means someone who talks too much, maybe someone who likes to tattle to the boss. The other, jobsworth means someone who will do anything for the boss. A brown tongue or creep in other words.
