  1. I would think a great fullback or CHB.

How important was Matty Scarlett to Geelong. He has been all-Australian twice, maybe three times? Sure Cam Mooney was all-Australian this year. Back in the Ablett-Brownless days, Geelong had the scoreboard looking like a pinball machine, but didn't have the defense to win the premierships in 1989, 1992, 1994 or 1995.

Now Geelong has a great back line, the forward line came along this year, and yippee!!! Premiership.

Back line is more important in my opinion.

  2. backs.

sure, the forwards kick the goal, and get the praise but who stopped a goal at the other end and got it down to them?

  3. brownlow wise it has always been midfielders that are more valuable

but when you look on reviews of each match

the forwards get listed for every goal they make and the midfielders get recognised for their possesions.

There have always been more idolised players in the forward line though.

  4. Its a good question, and without trying to sit on the fence I'll say they are both equally as important as one another-take my team Carlton good fwrd line with fev, waite, fisher etc was in the top teams for goals kicked but also with a weak back line was (i think) no.1 for goals kicked against it and finished down near the bottom-so in my opinion both are the same value and only a good balanced side is a contender for the flag.

the days of having a gun forward to win games for you are well and truly over,as are the 100 goal forwards

geelong would be the perfect example great at both ends of the ground and with a killer mid field.

and if i Had to pick id pick a gun midfield with plenty of rotation and a gun back line to back it up rather than a gun forward line

  5. Ruby, having been a coach for several years, in my opinion,  it would be a good backline, it's a hard one though because if you load up with all your guns in the back half then you are left with no-one to kick the goals.

you do need to score to win the game, but you don't want to get blown out of the water.

it's OK if you have real top class on ball division that can take the ball out of the centre for you but if you haven't the back line gets attacked over and over, they have to be able to kick much better these days, other wise the ball just comes back over. their head.

but the question is who is more valuable right,if its A forward or A Backman i would say a forward cause they kick the goals that win you the match,  but  the forward line  vrs backline ,overall a good backline, cause they will keep you in the game. onballers can carry the ball and score these days, straight over the forwards heads.

  6. If you dont Score you dont win.  Forward hands down.

But, and a very big one, if you cant get the ball to your forwards you still wont score.  Teams with a strong mid field generally do very well.

  7. Oh please god bless the Adelaide Crows with a decent full forward.

I think both positions are equally important.

  8. a back

you dont need forwards as much because the midfield can also score and so can most th players on th team wen given th chance. not every player has th skill to defend a forward though, so you can't really put anyone there. Defenders have to do more then just kick the ball, which all th players can do. they have to be able to read the play, keep forwards under control, decide whether to spoil or go for a mark, keep with their player, guard other loose players, etc etc.  their job is mor important and there is more pressure on them because if they stuff up, it can result directly to a goal for th other team.

also they have to be more carefull with rules such as th hands hands in th back rule and holding because most of th time th umps favour th forwards, so really forwards can just play for free kicks and backs actually have to do stuff.

  9. This is a brilliant question i think a backman is more important but the again you cant win a game with out any goals. To me there equal but i lean towards backman.

  10. neither... a champion midfielder for sure....

  11. Having played at both ends your question is hard to answer, you need good forwards to score but they can only get the ball if the backline is capable of repelling opposition advances, but if history is anything to go by there have been a good number of back line players thrust forward that have become proven match winners, so I say a backman who is capable of going forward and scoring.
