Those both sound like horrible stereotypes.  We have a word in America: prejudice.  It usually refers to a situation like this, where you generalize a huge group of people in a bad way.

Yes, most educated adults in America know that there are two very distinct cultures in Italy, North and South, and the most enlightened among us even realise that Sicily, where most Italians and Italian food styles are represented here, is yet another culture.  However, most of us also realize that there are good and bad people/things/situations in all parts of any country.
