In an Olympic relay, do all swimmers get medals? Even if they only swam in the preliminary heats?

For example: In the 400m freestyle, 3 of the swimmers swam in the preliminary heat but did not compete in the finals. Do those swimmers get a gold medal too?

Yes. All 7 swimmers get medals. If you look at the following link, you'll notice that all the swimmers for the USA are listed as medal winners in the relays.

yes, all the swimmers, including the ones who only swam in the preliminaries........get the medal. that is how it works with relays.
