  1. Osmosis is a phenomenon where the water molecules move from their higher cncentration(low solute concentration) to their lower concentration (high solute concentration) through a semi permeable membrane. It occurs so that water mols. become equally distributed and the process also helps in transfer of water mols. from cell to cell.

  2. Goalie the other answerers were correct about their definitions of osmosis but i would like to express it in an easier way. Osmosis is the downhill movement of water with respect to concentration gradient across a semi-permeable membrane (from an area of higher concentration to an area of lower concentration). This by all means does not require the utilization of energy.

    Hope this helps...

  3. -osmosis is the diffusion of water molecules across the semi permeable membrane.

-it is a net movement of water molecules from a region of low solute concentration to high solute concentration through a semi permeable membrane.

*the osmosis process does not require energy* compared to the active transport.

  4. Osmosis is the process in which water moves from a region of high concentration of water (low concentration of solute) to a region of low water concentration (high concentration of solute) through a selectively permeable membrane.

The potato cells have a membrane under the cell wall.  Potato cells have dissolved substances (solute) within the cell.  If there is more water outside the cell than inside the cell, water molecules will diffuse into the cell.  If there is more water inside the cell than the solution outside the cell, water will move out of the cell.

  5. Its the transference of water through a cell membrane or semi-permeable barrier or wall.
