  1. Yeah, tie goes to the runner.  (Which leads me to say that A-Rod was safe on the game-ending double play last night...  Oh, well.  Too bad.)

    =D

  2. nope if you look in the rule books or know about baseball unlike many of the people who have awnsered this questioon a tie is an out the runner has to beat the throw if its a tie its an out because he didnt beat the throw

  3. Speaking more scientifically, there is technically never a "tie."  While it may appear so with the naked eye, this is simply not the case.  The umpire must make the call based upon all of the available information.  There is no rule in baseball that "a tie goes to the runner."

  4. what the h**l are you talking about?

  5. Wrong, there's no tie in baseball. It's either safe or out whatever the umpire calls goes.

  6. This has been an ongoing arguement since the sport began!

There are no provisions in any rulesets for a "tie" (except in scores).

There actually can be a tie at the base in which it is not humanly possible to determine whether the batter reached or was tagged, (or base tagged) first. All rulesets do state that the runner is out if the fielder holding the ball tags the base BEFORE the runner touches it. If a runner and a fielder reach the base at the exact same time, (which would be a "tie"), the runner would be safe not because "tie goes to the runner," but because the fielder did not tag the base BEFORE the runner touched!

Many people do believe that there is a rule which states TIE GOES TO THE RUNNER! That just is not so. The way the rules are written, even though it is possible for a "tie" to happen physically happen it can never be ruled as such!

  7. Nope. But this won't stop people from quoting a non-existent rule. (Such people have probably never even seen a rulebook.)

First, a "tie" is nigh near impossible, and certainly not perceptible to the human brain.

Second, there are conflicting rules in the rule book. Rule 6.05(j) states that a batter is out when "after a third strike or after he hits a fair ball, he or first base is tagged before he touches first base..."

That would seem to give a "tie" to the batter-runner.

But Rule 7.08(e) states that a runner is out when "he fails to reach the next base before a fielder tags him or the base, after he has been

forced to advance by reason of the batter becoming a runner."

That gives the "tie" to the defense.

    So which is it?

The answer is 7.08(e) by custom, because a batter-runner is a runner by definition (Rule 2.00).

But don't listen to me. I'm just a veteran umpire who studies the rules several times a year, attends classes, etc. Woe for me to question the intelligence of sandlot bullies who have never read an actual rule.

  8. No

"runner has to beat the ball to the bag"

A tie is not beating the ball.

No such things as tie goes to the runner it has never ever been true and will never be true.

  9. very correct

  10. Yes.

  11. yupp

  12. tie gose to runner which personally I really think is a great rule

  13. Really it depends on the umpire. You can't just assume he will go that way with the call. It's how they see it not how it should be.
