  1. for soft hands 17 below, you will ALWAYS hit them whenevr you do not double down on them.

soft 18 (ace,7)  is a grey area, i will explain in detail...

in a game where the dealer stands on soft 17, the correct play for

soft 18 vs X where x is the dealers card is....

    2-stand

    3-Double

    4-Double

    5-Double

    6-Double

    7-Stand

    8-Stand

    9-Hit

    10-Hit

    Ace-Hit

For soft 19s and higher you should always stand

***In a game where the dealer hits a soft 17

    The above plays are all correct with the following exceptions;

soft 18vs2-becomes beneficial to double down

soft19vs6- becomes beneficial to double down

That is how you play out soft 18s and above, im not gogin to get into detail on all of the other soft hands, howvere you can learn more about some aspects of basic playing strategy at http://www.hitorstand.net

  2. I wouldn't.

  3. You should hit a soft 18 against a 9 , 10 or A.

Playing in casinos ( I know because I deal in one) people quite often hit the soft 18 against a picture or an ace but rarely against a 9.

In the long run you're slightly better off hitting in all three cases.

  4. NO!

There is a basic strategy to blackjack, and you should learn it and play the strategy every hand. Here is a link:

  5. I'm not a gambler but an ace and a 7 makes 18.  If you take a hit, you'll probably go over.

  6. You could make it equal 8, and in that case I'd hit.

  7. Well, that's what is considered a "soft 18," meaning you can stay, and have 18, or you can hit, and the ace's value will go down to 1 instead of 11 if you go over.

I personally wouldn't advise it, as 18 is general a safe number to stay at.  However, if the dealer is showing a 9 or a face card, and you're assuming they have a face card down, you may hit to see if you can spike a 2 or a 3 and hit 21, and even if you hit a higher card, you're still safe because the ace reverts to a value of 1.

    No.

<<<in blackjack should you hit if you have an ace 7?>>>

Sometimes. Exactly which times depends upon the rules in the casino where you are playing.

Learn the strategy chart for the rules used in the casino where you are playing or, if you wish, simply bring a copy of it with you when you play.

Most casinos now use four or more decks in most games. The strategy charts for those games are at

    http://wizardofodds.com/blackjack/strate...

    You should hit an A 7 against a dealer's 9, 10, or A in such a game.

At least as important is that you should double down against a dealer's 3, 4, 5, or 6 if allowed. If the dealer hits on soft 17 you should also double down against a dealer's 2. If you cannot double down on these hands stand instead of hitting.

In a one or two deck game the strategy is the same as in a four or more deck game except that if the dealer stands on soft 17 you should stand against a dealer's A.

    Addendum:

In another response sandynlily, who claims to be a professional blackjack player, said "for soft hands 17 below, you will ALWAYS hit them whenevr you do not double down on them."

    That statement is absolutely wrong.

I gave an explanation as to why it is wrong previously at

    http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;...

Also, you will notice in the strategy charts I referenced they say to stand when you cannot double. Here is another strategy chart from another site that says the same thing.

    http://www.blackjackinfo.com/bjbse.php

In all the books and sites I have read about blackjack I have never seen one that recommended always hitting a soft 18  when you would double down by cannot. (If you are counting cards there may be a time when you would hit, but that is far beyond basic strategy.)
