on merchant ships like the Titanic the order is Captain/ 1st mate or officer/ 2nd mate or officer/ 3rd mate or officer and so on until you hit the ordinary seaman.

Below the Master, (the legal title for "Captain") are the Chief Mate (Chief Officer) Chief Engineer and Chief Steward. These are the 3 department heads on a merchant ship. Under the Chief Mate are the second and third mates, boatswain, Able seamen and Ordinaries.

Under the Chief Engineer are the first, second and third engineer, electrician, pump-man, oilers, (QMED's) firemen, and wipers.
