In california what is required to get a permit at the age of 15?

I know you have to be around 15 and 1/2 to get your permit but is there anything else other than a test required at DMV? Ive already taken my high school drivers ed class and earned my pink slip for when im ready but i heard from someone that now you have to drive with a licensed DMV associate to show some things in order to get a permit but i thought this was only for your actual license ?? Please help!

you need a birth certificate and your slip from school...you can take the written test if you like, but you can't take the driving portion till you're 16. (then it's behind the wheel...after you've had a LOT of practice.)

once you get your permit you have to take drivers training, which is behind the wheel instuction.
