In cars why disc brakes are in front wheels and drum brakes are in rear wheels?

In small cars (like Toyota corolla) it is seen that always drum brakes are in rear wheels and disc brakes are in front wheels. Can anyone explain the reason?

  1. In most front wheel cars they have disc brakes in the front and most of the weight is in the front so disc helps the car to stop a lot quicker in the front and drums in the rear because there hardly isn't that much weight. Now some street racers and performance front and wheel drive have disc brakes all around. I hope this helps and have a blessed day!!!

  2. The front wheels on most cars do 80% of the braking, disc brakes resist fade better (don't overheat so quickly) and are lighter than a comparable drum brake system - important for ride comfort and handling qualities, on the rear drum brakes are quite adequate for normal driving and cheaper to produce. On larger cars larger brakes are needed all round and often the cars have anti lock brakes as well, disc brakes meet these requirements more satisfactorily.

  3. The reason goes along with physics... The car when stopped transfers all it's weight to the front. Disc brakes are better, and on average economic cars they are only in the front. You have drums on the back to stabalize the car but most of the stopping power is in the front. Look at the front wheels compared to the back and you'll notice that the front are dirtier, this is because of all the brake dust from the front brake pads.

On higher end cars you will see all four wheels having disc brakes, but even then the front brakes are still bigger in diameter.

BMW and  afew other companies use 4 wheel discs, but add in a drum settup in the back for the parking brake. Pretty nifty!

  4. depends on what type of car front wheel or rear wheel the drum is the hand break take off ur wheel ans pull out the drum u will c 2 round break shoes which are connected to the hand break

  5. it all comes down to cost of putting on 4 wheel disc brakes. drum brakes are older tech and cheaper. (but they still do the job but just not as effect as disc brakes).

so to answer your question... it just to cut down on manufacturing cost.

  6. need more breaks in front than rear so put efficient disc and drums are cheaper than disc so they go with those in back
