In chemistry, what is a reducing agent, what does it do, or how does it affect solutions?

  1. A reducing agent will of course, reduce another solution. Whereby the oxidation number of the solution is reduced.  


  2. I'm almost positive it reduces the pH level in the solution.  

  3. A reducing agent will cause something else to be reduced.  So for instance, if you mix C and FeO, it will make CO and Fe, the iron is reduced, so the carbon is a reducing agent.  

    The reducing agent itself gets oxidized.

    It depends on what the solution consists of, if there is something that is easily reduced in solution, it will reduce that substance.
