a white piece? If not, is it legal to move the white king there to checkmate black considering that the definition of check is the king being in a space attacked by a piece of the opposite color?

  1. Since it is possible for to move your King one square in any direction, you could technically capture any of your opponents pieces on any of those squares provided that such a capture was a legal move.

So, if your opponent moves one of their pieces next to your King and that piece is unprotected, you King could capture it.

However, your opponent cannot move their King to any square next to your King because it is illegal to move your own King into check (any square where it could be captured by your opponent's next move).

  2. Neither King is allowed to directly attack the other King.

You can not move your King onto ANY square that is controlled by ANY of your opponent's pieces or pawns (including your opponent's King).

These prohibitions also apply to your opponent.

    .

You can, of course, use your King to help other pieces in checkmating your opponent's King.   But your King can only guard the enemy King's flight squares, it can never attack the enemy  King directly.

  3. the king cannot move into a space (or position) that the enemy piece occupies or could occupy.

  4. Yes, they are under attack by the black king and the white king cannot go there.  Supposedly as soon as he does black takes the white king.

Since, by rule, a player can't move into check, that move by the white king is illegal.

  5. Your question indicates that you want to move the

White King next to the Black King to checkmate Black.

No. The answer is just that simple. In chess:

"moving a King, next to the other King, is never allowed."

If you want to think about your example more, consider this:

if capturing the King were allowed, Black would capture first.
