I have always moved them forwards but a few people I have played with move them diagonally. Also, can you move them two spaces on their first go?

  1. When starting a chess game you have the option of moving a pawn forward, one square, two squares, consequent moves are one square only, the pawn moves diagonally only when capturing an opposing piece, if you can get a pawn to the eighth row, you can replace it with any piece of your choice.

  2. good question. pawns can move 2 spaces forward on that first move by that pawn. if uve all redy moved it, it can only go 1 forward. the only time it can go diagonally is if it capturing the oponents piece.

  3. they move forward, but they can only eliminate other pieces diagonally.

  4. Pawns move only 1 square forward, with one exception: On their 1st move, Pawns can move forward 2 squares.

Pawns can only move diagonally when they are going to "kill" an opponent in the square diagonal to it [but only in front of them, Pawns can never move backwards]. When there is an opponent in the square diagonally in front of a Pawn, they are allowed to take their spot.

~Hopefully that was simple & understandable.

  5. Pawns are unusual in movement and use. Unlike all the other pieces, pawns may not move backwards. Normally a pawn moves by advancing a single square, but the first time each pawn is moved from its initial position, it has the option to advance two squares. Pawns may not use the initial two-square advance to jump over an occupied square, or to capture. Any piece directly in front of a pawn, friend or foe, blocks its advance. In the diagram at right, the pawn on c4 may move to c5, while the pawn on e2 may move to either e3 or e4.

Unlike other pieces, the pawn does not capture in the same way as it moves. A pawn captures diagonally, one square forward and to the left or right.

En passant (from French: "in [the pawn's] passing") is a move in the board game of chess. En passant is a special capture made immediately after a player moves a pawn two squares forward from its starting position, and an opposing pawn could have captured it if it had only moved one square forward. In this situation, the opposing pawn may, on the immediately subsequent move, capture the pawn as if taking it "as it passes" through the first square; the resulting position would then be the same as if the pawn had only moved one square forward and the opposing pawn had captured normally. The En passant capture must be done on the very next turn, or the right to do so is lost.

Promotion is a chess term describing the transformation of a pawn that reaches its eighth rank into the player's choice of a queen, knight, rook, or bishop of the same color. The new piece replaces the pawn on the same square and is part of the move. Because of promotion, it is possible to have more than one queen or more than two rooks, bishops, or knights. Since the promoted piece starts on the square of the pawn, it is possible to have more than one bishop on the same color of square. Promotion is not limited to pieces that have already been captured. Whether or not a chess endgame can be won often hinges upon the promotion of a pawn.

  6. You can only move 2 spaces forward on the 1st go; you can capture diagonally say the game starts 1.e4 1...d5 one second move could be the capture 2.exd5 capturing the black pawn with your pawn at d5 as your final position.

Also there is a move called "En passant" which is a type of capture that can only be made if your piece is on the (if white 5th file; if black 4th) and your opponent moves his pawn 2 spaces forward as the 1st move, if your pawn happens to be next to it you can capture.

    An example

    1.e4 1...e6

    2.e5 2...d5

    3.exd5

your pawn will be at the d6 square after the capture of the d5 pawn

    Hope this helps

  7. they move forward and when they capture, they capture diagonally. you can move them 2 squares on their first move
