-Pawn is in second row and has not made first move yet.

-An opponents piece is on the diagnol either to the left or the right of the pawn that has not moved.

-Can the pawn capture this piece?

  1. Yes. Learning the pawn's move is tricky, partly because:

The pawn is the only piece on the board that does not move backward.

The pawn is the only piece that does not capture in the same way that it moves.

    Pawn captures one-square diagonally-forward.

    Pawn moves one-square straight-forward,

with an option of two-squares forward on it's first move.

There are special moves: en passant and promotion.

Remember: if your king is in check, you must address that first; and you are not allowed to make any move with any chessman that would put your king in check.

  2. Absolutely.

  3. Yes, 1 square only.

  4. 4 sure

  5. yes .. pawns  can only get there opponents in a diagnol manner..  or move up 2 spaces forward if not moved previously. other wise they can only move in a diagnol manner.

  6. Yes, such a pawn could capture an opponents piece.

It doesn't make any difference which rank (row) a pawn is on or whether it has been moved or not. It can always diagonally capture an opponents piece as long such a move is a legal move.

  7. yes of course. but I think the pawn has an added bonus of being able do this  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/En_passant I dont know if this is what you're talking about
