    According to the rules of chess, the king can be moved to any adjoining square not attacked by one or more of the opponent's pieces.

    If you do it, you would be moving your king to an square attacked by opponent's king which is against this rule,

  5. Basically the kings cannot go within one square of the other king.  It places the king in check, which is an illegal move.

    A king can not place himself in check.  If you moved a king next to another king he would be moving into check.
