I cannot visualize playing online half as good as i can playing with a real board. Some reason i always make stupid decisions and can never look ahead like i can with a real board in front of me. Anyone else notice this? Wonder if it has to do with the image being 2d.

  1. Yes. Play online is playing with somebody via Internet, but in the real board, you play with real human, face to face.

  2. Coz playing online, u do not give the due respect to the com as to a human being.

  3. Perhaps some of your (and my) difficulties with on-line chess comes from the fact that almost all on-line games are blitz and you have very little time to think.  Also I played OTB (over the board) chess for 30 years before I ever played on-line and chess memory has a very visual aspect and for us it is easier to recognize patterns OTB where as you say it is presented to us in three dimensions.

  4. you are your own buddy

  5. Yes, there is a definite difference in your perception of the board between playing online and playing over the board.

I play a lot of both...however, I've talked to people who play almost exclusively online, and they tell me that, after playing online so much, looking at a 2D board on their monitor, that it's sometimes more difficult to see things on an actual board.

I guess it's kind of like doing something familiar while in an unfamiliar setting.

e.g. if you're used to sitting in a certain seat in a classroom, it can seem "strange" to sit somewhere else...or, if you work in an office, if you ever find yourself having to perform a task while sitting at someone else's desk, that can also seem weird.

Playing an actual over the board game after playing online (or against a Chess program on your monitor) can seem strange...the board looks different, and it can probably seem a little strange to see actual 3D pieces, after playing in 2D for so long.
