  1. start with the knights

  2. knights before bishops

  3. To be honest, I would start with central pawn moves then use your knights to protect them. a good way to use bishops is by fianchetto, where you move the b or g pawn one square forwards and put the bishop where the pawn was.

  4. Developing the knights before the bishops has been standard opening advice for at least 200 years now.  The reason for this is that you know that you want to develop the knights to c3 or f3 (c6 or f6 for black) but it will take you a few moves to decide which squares are best for your Bishops.

I could name any number of chess books as a reference but the best known one might be "Lasker's Manuel of Chess" by Emanuel Lasker 2nd World Champion

  5. Yes, tlp8311 is exactly right.

Develop your Knights first, because you already know what the best squares are for them...    c3 and f3 (white) and c6 and f6 (black).

The best squares for your Bishops may not be known for several moves, so it's better to wait a few moves so that you won't have to move your Bishops twice in the opening.

  6. Hi,

Depends!  You may like to visit my web page - link below?  See 'BS' and 'KT' which describes the merits of each of these pieces.

  7. Knights.  They are more maneuverable while there is still a lot of wood on the board.

  8. It varies from player to player.  Some will tell you Bishop, some will tell you Knights.

I personally develop both of them equally, on the kings side, and build up a strong defense around the king.  Generally it works pretty well, but if you can't develop the queens side fast enough you'll find yourself with alot of holes in your defense that you will never fill.
