  3. The King's Gambit is my favourite opening. But after playing it for 33 years I know about it's weaknesses too. Black has several good replies. The Modern defence is a strong choice: 1.e4 e5 2.f4 exf4 3.Nf3 d5 4. exd5 Nf6. Black gets good development, which is what White was hoping for! The Fischer defence is quite good. But the strongest line is probably the oldest: 1.e4 e5 2.f4 exf4 3.Nf3 g5 and if 4.h4 g4 5.Ne5 Nf6! and black ends up at least equal. I originally thought Black's third move was too defensive and materialistic, then I realised that Black does not hold onto the extra pawn, but instead gets open lines and a great counterattack. It's what I play when I'm black. I love the deception - it looks like greed but it's actually aggressive.

One last point - the Falkbeer Countergambit is weak for Black if White knows what he/she is doing. I think White can force an endgame advantage.

My FIDE rating is about 2200.

  4. The greatest disadvantage of the King’s Gambit is that White weakens his own king’s position and can sometimes find that it is his own king that is in jeopardy..

The King's Gambit is terribly fun to play and it almost seems that every 19th century master has a variation named after him.
